The current telecommunications paradigm is based on overprovisioning of slowly varying in time connections which remain in use regardless their degree of utilization. On the other hand, Optical Packet Switching (OPS) concepts and technologies never reached a standardization phase due to their complexity and scalability limitations.
We have proposed and validated alternative architectures at network and system level where the benefits of OPS are reaped by employing burst-mode transmission and passive multiplexing while the role of switching (optical or electronic) is minimized. Given that burst-mode transmission and passive multiplexing are the key building blocks of the most widely deployed technology in fixed-line Access, the potential of this synergy to revolutionize the Aggregation and Metro segments is considerable.
We have designed and deployed a fixed-wireless testbed that consists of XGS-PON and GPON systems, that emulate a Metro and a fixed-line Access, respectively, and WiFi wireless technologies. The testbed is operated by means of OLC’s SDN-enabled control-plane. Through this testbed we have demonstrated the benefits of the proposed mode of operation.
